March 21, 2023, Monrovia, Liberia – Civil Society Organizations (CSO), International partners, the Government of Liberia, and customary land owners gathered today at the Corina Hotel, for the launch of Phase II of Tenure Facility funded project titled “Keeping the promise: Expanding and strengthening community land and forest governance for a sustainable future”.

The event brought together the Board of Commissioners of the Liberia Land Authority headed by Atty. J. Adams Manobah, the Swedish mapping, cadastral, and land registration authority (Lantmatarient), national civil society organizations working in the land sector, community members representing the different landscapes of Liberia, the media, and Parley-Liberia (Lead Applicant), The Foundation for Community Initiatives (FCI), and the Sustainable Development Institute (SDI) as partners.

Making a presentation on the key activities and outcomes of the project, Nyahn Flomo of Parley Liberia, the lead applicant noted that the project’s two major outcomes are:
√ Project-targeted communities have clear and secure tenure of their customary land as a basis for attracting responsible investment, and
√ Community Land Development and Management Committeecompliesy with the Land Rights Act of 2018 and its by-laws in managing community land in an inclusive, transparent, and accountable manner, promoting gender equality and sustainable natural resource management and coordinating effectively with county land administration.
In remarks by Atty. J. Adam Manobah, Chairman of the Liberia Land Authority, stressed that there is a need to move from just the number of projects in the land sector to the number of communities that have received deeds from their customary land. He thanked the Tenure Facility for the contributions being made to support the work of the Liberia Land Authority.
The project Keeping the promise: expanding and strengthening community land and forest governance for a sustainable future will be implemented in 24 communities from phase I and 15 new communities totaling 39 project communities in 8 counties with a total of 3.56 million United States Dollars.
